double die?

    i have a 1989 d lincoln penny with what looks like an error on them back in the united states of America, is this a double die and if so, does anyone know if it is a valuable one?

    What you have here is not a doubled die and I'm not sure what caused it to be this way. I find these all the time when looking thru cent coins for errors. I have always thought that maybe the planchet was too small in diameter and when the coin die struck it the metal had to flow towards the retaining collar and it took the copper plating with it.This is just my best opinion.

    this is found on many cents from 1982 forward because the planchets were changed to copper plated zinc. what you are seeing is where the copper plating split under pressure and the zinc is showing below.
