Door handle coins

    These 1873 German 10 pfennigs were removed from ornate door handles somewhere in Germany during WWII by my father. He said they were behind a small glass window that he smashed out to get the coins. As a 21 year old soldier, he wasn't at all concerned about the reason they were incorporated into the handles and wanted to bring them home. I'm guessing they indicated the year the business (whatever it was) started. As the war wound down, all things German were fair game for souvenir seeking soldiers.

    Not worth as much as the Crown Jewels of Hesse, which some US officers took home as "souvenirs".

    Would have been cooler if they were still in the handles, IMO.
