Hey everybody. I came across one of these for sale online on auction thats at about $16 at the moment, it ends later today. I was wanting to identify it and had some difficulty. WildWinds shows there are 4 different types: RIC 248, 249, 250, and 252. According to WildWinds only 3 RIC 248s exist. Only 3 RIC 249s exist. And only 4 RIC 250s exist, yet 252 appears to have a normal population. Am I missing something? The coin I was looking at matches up to RIC 250. Thanks.
When Wildwinds says 4 examples, they mean that they show 4 sales of that coin and make no claim that there are not 4000 other examples that they do not have. Wildwinds is a fine record of many coins but is nowhere near complete on types that exist let alone every example of those types.
Oh really. That makes sense. That can be confusing because they say "four examples known" but they should really say "four records found" or something. So is it scarce or just an ordinary coin? Here are the pics: Is this a good example? What would you say it is worth? Thanks much.
One of my favorite coins. Rhinos are really rare on ancient coins, with only two main types known, the Domitian quadrans and the Trajan Alexandrian issue. The problem with the Trajan issue is there are also ones with hippos, and many hippos are sold as rhinos. Always insist on the pointed nose for that one. For the Domitian, two different reverses, each with rhino left and right known. Rhino left in my experience a little scarcer, but all are scarce. This one is not a great example, but would still be worth north of $25 to someone who wanted the type. I used to pay $100 for a VF, but cannot buy them for that any more. Some VFs go for over $200 nowadays.
Best to ask questions about a live auction privately. Between all the registered users and guests you've displayed this particular auction to lots of people. Just a friendly tip.
RHINO: RI Trajan Egypt AE Dichalkon Laureate hd L Rhinoceros walking L LI-Z yr 17 CE 113-114 12.9mm 1.25g Emmet 719 var. rhino right Ex: SteveX6 Collection (I believe @TIF has one of these little gems also...)
Better than average example. These are also known with rhino left and rhino right. I believe I own about 3 of each direction, so not sure if one is scarcer than the other. Rhino left definitely has different portraits of Trajan than rhino right though.
