A board member contacted me and offered a few coins for sale. I know at least 2 members will recognize this coin. I chose this one because I loved the look of it and because I had not seen the type. I would like to thank the board member for offering this one. Though my last few were acceptable regarding condition this one is very nice indeed. Just look at the nose on that portrait. According to RIC coins of this issue were produced in the first few months of 82 and before the currency reform that would see the fineness of the silver denarii increase to almost 100%. please post anything you may deem relevant. Domitian AR Denarius Rome Mint 82 CE (First Issue) Obv: Laureate head right, IMP CAES DOMITIANUS AVG PM Rev: Altar garlanded and lighted, TR POT COS VIII P P RIC 94 (R) BMC 32, RSC 598 Purchased privately, March 1, 2019
Really nice Orfew! I love the portrait and the "right to left" obverse legend... followed by a "left to right" reverse legend. Is that a common feature of Domitian's coins? I have seen this for a few Emperors but not for others...
Good question @Clavdivs Starting in 81 CE with the first issues of Domitian as Augustus the obverse legends began from the low right and clockwise. This ended with the second issue of 84 CE starting with RIC 176. From this time the obverse legends started from low left (counter clockwise) and this continued for the rest of his rule.
Great acquisition Andrew, congrats! I would have jumped at that one too. Here's an early Domitian from September 13-December 31, 81 AD IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG PM Laureate head right TR P COS VII DES VIII Curule chair, wreath above Rome, September 13-December 31, 81 AD 3.5g RIC 48 (C)
That's one terrific coin Orfew been on my bucket list for quite a while, this Domitian AR was the second coin I ever purchased when I was collecting the twelve caesars. Domitian AR Denarius, Minerva standing.
Thanks @David Atherton , my Flavian collection will never equal yours, but I am having a great deal of fun with it.
