Please correct me if I am mistaken. Are the Presidential Dollar coins the first US coin to bear the dollar sign ($) ? All others use the word "Dollar" in capital letters. I seem to recall several old gold coins may have used the $ sign as well. Several gold coins also used edge desings as well. I believe the Presidential Dollars are the only ones to feature the mint mark as well as the motto "In God We Trust" on the edge. Likewise, British coins write out "One Pound" rather than use the symbol.
Also have a look at the Jamestown commems: The $1 coin says "ONE DOLLAR" while the $5 gold coin says "$5" ... Christian
