Since their inception I have doing my part to get these things into circulation. I spend roll upon roll of the things, and the response has been almost perfectly positive here. I spend them for all manner of purchases. From a few cents to $50.... yes I have used 50 coins to pay for the meal....they are really small and easy to count.... But even when I use that many, I often see the staff buy them out of the register.. Particular oriental or latino personage, they really seem to like these coins. If the staff does not get them, other people in line try to buy them off the register or get them back in change, or they try and buy them from me. I have not kept track, but I often run my bank out of what they order. When they run out of new rolls, I buy what loose dollar coins they have on hand. it's -considerable- the amount I personally have put into circulation, along side SBA's and Sacs. Since I mentioned the SBA's i have noticed they no longer get the negative reaction they once did. People are getting used to the one dollar coins, surely buy slowly. Machines take them most places, one transaction at a time. Coin by Coin, Roll by Roll, and Fedbox by Fedbox..... I even notice them given out as change now... but only if someone else spent them into the register, and the staff did not buy them out. LOL, small steps.... At the very lease the Mint is gonna make a killing on Seinorage. I have MUCH MUCH less luck using Halves...... they really are obsolete... and many try to count them as dollars... or quarters.... or both... Twos around here do not even get a second glance, they get taken and shoved under the register tray... I spend them at coin stores too..... only place that gets uncomfortable at me spending them, they take them out of sight quick.. because most are trying to sell the very same coins I spent at a premium! Ikes are too few and far between to use much, I use them for tips... people do try and buy them off me though. But the small dollars, allways make a SUPER buzz, where ever I spend them.
Ive been trying to get my hands on some half dollars in canada and Ive been told 65 dolars for shipping from the mint.!!! when Im going to be using them fror circulation I dont think so
yeah, Half dollars are hard to spend. I noticed the same thing, 2 dollar bills dont get much of a reaction... while half dollars, whoa boy! Same with the small dollars, people see them (in my experience of spending them) and just plop them in the register.
new dollars..... as long as the public has a choice between the dollar coin and the paper dollar the paper will win everytime!
I don't totaly agree, people have been very receptive to the presidential dollars. If people were offered them more.... people would use them more. It just a matter of changing ages old habbits. I bet if the Government were to give everyone a roll of small dollars with their Tax Stimulus checks, they would circulate. I have to deliberately fish them out of the bank... most people would NEVER bother, not an effective way to get them in consumers hands.
I would never visit the ATM again if the mint would introduce a nice looking silver dollar again. If it had some sort of Liberty figure on the front and eagle on the back and had some nice heft and size I'd keep them in my pocket at all times and spend them everywhere I went.
Funny you should mention ATMs, Japan has ATMs that spit out coins, but then again they have a coin that is worth about 4 of our dollars. I suspect getting ATMs to spit out coins in this country is a lost cause
lol, yea Japan rocks like that. They have a vending machine for pretty much everything imaginable. Anyway, I have yet to see any of the new dollars in circulation yet. Still getting Sac's for change here and there......
