There's no way to confirm an MS67 based on photos, but this coin certainly has a shot. You could send it to me for further investigation... Seriously, I honestly don't know what effect the rim dings would have, and I'd want to see the area from the nose to the chin and just behind the mouth to the stars in the same size as the whole coin - there are smidges in there which are of concern. If the coin's in your posession, pics taken with the lighting low and to the side will really bring out any marks which bright direct light will hide. That's a stunning Morgan.
i see one cut on the neck's obv, but that might just be the photo. you see the indention on the neck? reply and let me know something about it, as morgans are sort of my forte.
There does appear to be a cut on the neck. I am looking at this coin on ebay, and the eye appeal to me is tremendous, and I am considering paying bidding probably about 500 on it, but still need further consideration.
That sure is pretty. Not sure about 67. My last gold label PCI coins dropped 4 points when I sent them to ANACS. Myself, I would never buy a hopeful 66 or 67 coin unless it was slabbed by the top three... that's just because I don't have enough experience nor do I trust my own judgement. The neck cut... I only see the two divots on the neck that are standard on Morgans.
What "cut" are you seeing, other than what is inherent in the design? From what I see, the neck looks very nice.
the sort of groove in the neck down towards the sharp point it makes. its a little up. see the second star left of the date? go parallel. This definately has a chance for 65. 67? maybe. its still a beautiful piece that i'd pay a grand for.
I'd say the coin is a solid 65 for the date & mint with a shot at 66 - 67 is pretty iffy IMO. But sight unseen, I wouldn't pay more than 65 money for the coin unless it was in a top TPG slab, the seller had an excellent return policy and met all other criteria I require for ebay purchases.
With those pictures you cannot tell ANYTHING about the coin. The lighting has prevented any marks from showing and the luster is whiped out so that no frost breaks are seen. I don't know who the seller is or what they are saying about the coin, but someone in this thread mentioned gold label PCI. If that is the case, be extrememly conservative on your bid (i.e. PCI says MS67, you pay MS63 money). In that case you should be OK.
My eyes are old and tired, but I only see the two marks that are part of the normal Morgan design. I put arrows on the two I'm referring to. What am I missing?
I'd say 65-mabey 66, i also noticed a finger print by the RIC in America on the reverse. it looks like a nice coin
You'd better take a closer look at your Morgan Dollars, because these "cut marks" are an inherent part of the design. Put your hand out now, cuz I'm gonna slap it! :goofer: You're missing nothing, nesvt... this is part of the design... Julzboi, go stand in the corner...
Zane Does this seller has a good return? if I was bidding I would want one...the photos are taken at a place where it would hide some marks IMO.... see the fingerprint that YC pointed out--I see what might be 4 marks on the front...by the first U in "E pluribus" and by the chin and back by the back of the head by the **** What did PCI give it?? Speedy
wow guys i'm sorry.. must be my young eyes. i clearly see the incorporated cuts now.. i also wiped my monitor down. there was a black cut running horizontal. might have been an eyelash. :computer: :thumb:
All seriousness aside, I pulled these images into Photoshop and did the usual tricks of adjusting color levels and inverting the image - that tends to bring out some hidden errors in photographs. That brought stuff on the obverse - note the bagmark at about 4:00 from the mouth. The marks directly adjacent to the mouth are also somewhat plainer. On the reverse there's a ding between the IT of UNITED, and the nick outside the denticles next to RI looks a great deal nastier than in the photos. Don't get me wrong - this is a beautiful example. Just not, in my opinon, an MS67 and sure as heck not an MS68. I know I've mentioned my Ebay strategy here before, and to give you an idea of how it works, I would walk away from this auction at $325.
I'm going to walk away from the auction completely, the seller has no return policy, and he has now made the bidder ID private.
I looked at the auction and you should "run" from that one. Those pics had already gone through the photoshop. The red light comes on when seeing the TPG slab. A 65 grade might be optomistic. Bob
