If you take a closer look, there also appears to be some form of doubling on both the obverse and reverse...
The thing that gets me the most is the left rim. It looks as though it may have been struck off-center, but it just looks so odd...anyone else have an opinion on this coin?
Honestly it looks legit, the issue with the left side of the rim can be seen on other examples of this type.
Check out this page, many of these have it on various parts of the rim. http://www.nerarities.com/collections/collectorcollection/newjersey22p-29l.shtml
The left side doesn't bother me, I've seen that plenty of times. One of the things that does is the coin seems to have modest wear, but on the right hand side there is a thin high ridge above AS, through the top of RE that does not appear to have commensurate wear. Same thing above UN on the reverse. The denticals are missing in those areas so that ridge should have taken the brunt of the wear and it hasn't.
Points well-taken. By the left side, I assume you mean the denticles/rim thing. Do you have any input on the doubling that is present on the coin? Is this common, or a warning flag?
Yes the denticals/rim thing doesn't bother me. The doubling is odd. It is all over the coin and on both obv and rev. Being all over and on both sides I doubt it is MDD. But a double striking, or some kind of corrosion artifact is a possibility. Have you seen the coin in hand and checked for a casting seam? Because one other thing that can cause that is a shifting of the mold during casting.
I do not have the coin in-hand. It is currently up for auction on ebay (I lost the link, I'll see if I can find it).
I actually put in an early bid before taking a closer look at the coin and started questioning it. Here is the link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nova-Caesar...74?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item27d5201752
