I just bought this set of 1943 steel cents and I am wondering if they have been cleaned. I got the set for a steel at a coin show so it makes me kind of wonder. The picture is a little fuzzy on the edges but I hope it works Thanks
I'd have to say it looks cleaned. Most of the steel cents I've seen are a darker gray when they're circulated.
Due to the shiny look to the coin, I would suspect reprocessing! Is there any evidence of pitting underneath the Zinc coating on the Obverse and/or Reverse? If so, then it has been reprocessed (whizzed with a wire brush on a dremel tool or drill, then recoated with Zinc)! Frank
I have to say, in my unexpert opinion that this coin has at least been cleaned... It's one of those 3 coin sets and if you look at the s mint coin it has water spots on it. The coins are in amazing condition, only the slightest hint of wear on the obverse and the reverse is pretty much pristene. The problem for me is, now that I get them under a good light they are just too shiny. They almost look chromed, if that makes sense.
The coins may have been cleaned then polished as the Zinc coating will take on a high chome like shine when polished! When I see Steel Cents that shiny, my first thought is that they have been reprocessed as with considerable time, the Zinc coating takes on a steel grey look which maybe be dull to a very slight shiny look. I agree with huntsman. It looks to bright to be cleaned, but rather appears to be one of the many 1943 cents that have been reprocessed.
reprocessed, imo I've seen a bunch of them and when they do it, lincoln's head tends to lose some sharpness
