I'm still new to coin collecting but to me this morgan dollar looks like it has been cleaned. While i'm posting this I would like to know did I pay to much for it... I bought it for 20.00.
I dont think it was cleaned, it looks pretty good actually. I'm too lazy to look up the list on the coin but $20 seems to be a fair deal consiering the grade of that coin.
coin does appear to have been cleaned, judgeing from photo of obverse. i would estamate the coin to be about EF-45 to AU-50,would be helpful to see reverse. 2006 red book lists 1884-P in AU-50 at $ 20.00
It looks like it has been cleaned.(Shiny but lackluster, with dirt in the wreath and around the eagle.) Charlie
Cleaned....most of the time cleaning takes the value down 50%....but since the silver would be worth more at this time I'm going to say yes you overpaid but maybe silver will go up and you can sell it. Places are selling/buying junk silver right now at $8-$10 each....so that is around what a dealer would give for this coin IMHO.....since I don't collect Morgan Dollars maybe I'm wrong. Speedy
Looks like the lady went for a dip. Still a decent looking AU coin. I'd say you only paid a few extra bucks for it.
Thanks everyone. I thought it looked like it had been cleaned and I was right. If I wanted to sell it how much could I get for it? I want to get rid of it :smile
I've noticed that in just the past two weeks, all of the Morgans below $10 seem to be gone from the places I look, and dealers have marked up even low grade cleaned coins above the $10 level. But I agree that a dealer would probably offer about $10 for the coin in the picture. If I owned it, I would just hold it, put it into a folder and wait for it to retone. Sometimes retoned coins seem to sell better even if the buyer knows it is retoned. I don't know why. Maybe it's like serving a jail term and "atoning" for the crime.
Possibly cleaned in the past but then many older silver coins have been dipped or cleaned in some respect. appears like someone tried to hide the cleaning by placing in wet dirt to add some dirt in places. Many years ago it was not considered a major crime to clean coins to make them pretty. When I was a kid, cleaning was extensive on many coins. Unless your planning on selling that coin, don't worry about it. So much depends on your scope of coin collecting. If your in it for a fast profit, then best really get to know your coins. If your in it for just a hobby and plan on keeping your coins, don't worry about things like cleaned coins. Buy what you like.
Thanks. I've decided to keep it. I have 3 more morgans I would like y'all to look at but will have to take pics of them. I'll post them soon. Thanks Again, Dano
