I want some opinions on the grade of this jeff. I obviously have the dealer's on the 2x2, but somehow, I'd rather have independent opinions. I am thinking about sending it in to be slabbed, but if it won't really make 65... I am not gonna bother. Thanks in advance for all the help.
It looks like a very nice Jefferson, The fields are clean (free of blemishes) , the focal points are all very clean. The dealer has it advertised as a full steps. The picture is a bit hard to make out the steps to confirm this. Overall I would definately say Solid - High MS65... The only thing in question is the steps and at this point I can't determine that from the photo.
I can't see the steps either, but I'm wondering, how many do you need thesedays? I don't know that you need all 6, do you...to get an FS designation? And that's another thing. Why do the graders call 6 steps and 5 steps FS? Why not call them 6S and 5S, respectively, so we know what they're talking about? Or even 4S or 3S (...ad nauseum)?
My opinion, a 63. The coin is very poorly struck, has poor luster and little eye appeal. It is definitely not worth having it graded. Even a 65 FS sells for $50 or less, and this coin is not FS. I would say value at best is $10.
To answer eddiespin's question; The steps are 5 full steps not 6. however, for a pre-1970s Jefferson, in order to qualify as FS by PCGS and NGC, you need only 5 steps. It is close but no banana for the 6th, but that's ok. There are definately 5 uninterrupted. If there's a way to make the scan a higher res, maybe I can do that should anyone really want to examine the steps. I think that the steps are full, it is more a matter of what GDJMSP said that if it is less than a gem, it's not worth slabbing. I have an NGC 66 FS and IMHO this coin looks every bit as nice. It sells for over $100, and therefore would make the slab worth having for the purposes of selling the lesser of the two coins. The 1942-D is one of my favorite Jeffs because I have put together sets before and an attractive, gem example is always harder to find. If anyone wants to see it better, I can take a pic with my digital camera.
Decent MS-63, but the slight patches above the building, the poor striking etc make it not worth slabbing.
I think it's a nice looking coin, but what is the whitish area between Monticello and the U in UNUM? Is it on the coin or on the 2 x 2?
Mike, that's a very nice pre-Warnick 1942D Jefferson Nickel you've got there.I've never ever seen an Unc. Warnick,as the ones that turn up over here in New Zealand are usually the very worn ones. Aidan.
I wouldn't make a judgement based on that photo. Would like to see the coin out of the 2x2. Nice coin but photo just not clear enough. And as already noted, not worth having it graded unless you just like slabs.
Look at the poor toning and lustre, the weak strike on the centre of the obverse and the reverse...60 to 63....
