I found this quarter in my change. Does anyone recognize it? Is it real? There is no image at the back. Just the name "Canada", 25 cents and the year.
Welcome to the forum. I would gather we need pics of what the coin is supposed to look like. Until then it could be anything and everything including the actual design of the coin.
Only obverse I see like this one is on a 2006, but looks like yours is 2000? http://www.jandm.com/script/getitem.asp?CID=3&PID=98
I see a perfectly round outline in the middle which makes me think it has been machined smooth. The pics are too small for me to say for certain though.
I can only see two ways for this to happen, assuming it isn't part of the design: both the mid part of the design was shallow and the die was grease filled (the typical signs for this are not present in the photograph); or someone, for whatever reason, sanded or polished the mid design elements off. It wasn't misprinted and I see no other way for part of the design on a die to simply not be present on the coin after the strike unless something (i.e., a viscous material) was in its path. This coin also looks to be the exact same one posted last year (but I may be wrong). Is there a Canadian error specialist that knows something different who can chime in?
That would be really funny if the guy last year found out it was post mint damage and spent it and this guy posted the exact same coin on here. I did a Google search to try to find more of this possible variety but found nothing.
Perhaps it's something like this with the stick-on gone; http://www.talismancoins.com/catalog/Canada_2007_Hummingbird_Quarter.jpg
not a 'mis-print' nor a 'mis-stamping' an error in the minting process, possible. looks like a greased die.
