Do you think the mint is doing to much to change us coinage?

I mean, quarters were good, then nickels came...now they are planning dollars with pictures of people many people don't even know the name of! I think the mint has gone way to far and should leave collecting to the true collectors who like coins becuase they are coins and not fake commemorotive coins that will never be worth anything. I'm not saying I don't like the new coins as it offers more of a variety for new collectors to find in change, it just gets annoying how people save the coins so they never circulate. I have seen maybe 1 2005 nickel in change! I might dump an extra roll of bisons in to see where they end up.

I'd be perfectly happy if they wanted to change US Coinage if they just changed the design and then left it alone for another 100 years (like the Lincoln cent). That's what provides me enjoyment - searching for a specific date in a mixture of the same design of coin. Now there's 5 quarters a year, four or five nickels, the dime, and there's going to be 4 cents in 2009, several dollars, and then the now-uncirculated halves! What more madness can they possibly throw into there!?!?

I know...2007=5 quarters, 4 dollars, a NEW ugly imho nickel, a dime, a half dollar that no one uses, and a penny that has almost no value in the current day and age. Thats a total of 12 coins from each mint. Then comes proofs, silver proofs, commemorotives and bullion anddddd....you can watch the mint drain your savings lol

It is definately getting ridiculous, in my opinion. I'm mainly interested in old coins, but I try to stay up to date and get the new ones too. Its getting to be too confusing and annoying. Coins are getting obsolete as quickly as computers!!!

the mint is interested in changing the coins for monetary gain, not for changing the designs of coins that have had their time in the sun and should be retired as designs. If they wanted to do it right the would re-vamp all designs and leave them alone for a generation or so

As a business the mint is out there to make money and they know how to do it. History shows that even when they come up with bad ideas, regardless of popularity, people will still collect them.

Totally agree with this... The state quarter coins is a good idea... But those commemorative coins that never circulate and cost just about too much are not worth it IMO.

In terms of the USA versus other countries, it's not even close in terms of "collector-intended" issues.

Just to the north, for example, Canada is pumping out commemoratives at a comparatively fast pace. Some smaller countries seem to have commemoratives as their #1 export.

And I've been told that world stamps are even more profuse... well, then they are usually a bit cheaper at face value as well.

My, my how the times have changed. Never thought I'd live to see the day - but I guess it's here.

Now for those who don't know what I mean by that, you shoulda been around 30 yrs ago. There was campaign after campaign to try and get the US Govt to agree to change coinage designs. They were all ignored. When coin forums first started popping up - every week or so there was a loooooooooooong thread with every single member clamoring for change - it was contantly in the numismatic press.

On the old Coin World forum, the topic was raised. And guess who came up with the bright idea of saying - what's wrong with you guys, if you want change in coinage all ya gotta do is ask 'em. Which of course, everybody else answered with - OK wise guy, go ahead organize it then and ask them. That turned into a lot of work I'll tell ya - sometimes you're better off to keep your mouth shut.

So it all came to pass and the requests were made, the petitons were filed etc etc. Which brings us to today and all that has transpired since then.

The moral of the story - be careful what ya ask for

What we need is someone with worlds of experience in this type of promotion. As your campaign manager, I could help get you elected to do it all over again. How does that grab you?:kewl:

lol, this sounds awefully familliar to "be careful what you pray for, you might get it".

Anyway, I appreciate your efforts Doug and even though I wasn't around in the old days of coin forums I've read some of the articles you wrote to get the designs changed and I am glad there were people (was a person, lol) willing to do that back then. We are reaping the rewards now with a larger than ever base of new collectors that can be traced to the new circulating coins. I am glad that I didn't have to live through the 1948-1975 years where the only design changes were the 1959 cent reverse change and the 1964 half change, that would have been boring! I like the new designs, even if I only collect them passively; it beats the alternative!

You missed one, 5 dollars next year four presidents and the Sac. And when you say a NEW nickel do you mean just the current one with a new date or do you know about yet another new design that I have not heard of?

No, I mean the new one from this year (that ugly one)

I just want them to get the lame-looking dead presidents off our stale, dated coinage and try to reclaim the glory days of US coinage of 1907-1947

I liked the circulation coinage better when there were no images of dead presidents and other folks deemed worthy. That should have remained solely for commemorative coins.
