The mintmarks were punched in last after the rest of the die was already made - hence different dies - different mintmark locations.
They just had to make my birth year interesting . I really wanted them to do a D over horizontal D but the mint never listens to a few month old kid .

Nope! Until the early 90's, the mintmarks were hand-punched into the working dies. If you want to get an idea of how far off they could be, just search Kennedy half dollars of the 70's & 80's. The mintmark was all over the place. Chris
