I just picked up an 1839 O $2.50 piece and noticed its die alignment is like that of a metal. I was just curious if it would have any premium or if it is just a curiosity about the coin.
I would say yes. BTW, medal, not metal. There is a difference. Your metal coin has a medal alignment.
Thank you for the correction on medal, and I am actually putting together the invoice for NGC right now.
And if you DO get it graded, you have to make sure and mark "error" and pay the premium, or they do not grade it as such. Post a pic first though!
Yes, please do, if the majority of people here doubt that it is authentic, you might want to think twice about slabbing it.
I do not own many classic head $2 1/2, so had to look it up. It is common enough it is noted in the coin facts. Still pretty cool though! http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/7701
I'll take a photo of it first thing in the morning. I bought it today from a gentleman I've known for years who has the $2.50 classic head set in au58 and higher. This was one of his lower grade coins. I think it's a solid VF with the possibly of XF. But again. I'll post photos tomorrow.
Nice coin! Possibly cleaned.. hard to tell with that lighting. If you do get it graded, ask for error to be noted.
It got sent to NGC earlier today. After seeing it wasn't that uncommon I wasn't worried about it being on the slab. It was in a PCGS holder as xf details, damaged. The gentleman I bought it from and I couldn't see any damage outside of a rim ding. So I figured I would roll the dice. He also added eleven more gold coins to the shipment, that's going to be a fun guess the grade.
Are they your gold or his? What else are you getting graded? Also, why are you crossing it from pcgs to ngc... just to see if it grade straight with no damage?
The gold coins are his, there were 8 $2.50 between liberty and indian, a $5 liberty, and two $10, one a liberty the other an indian. The $10 indian and $5 liberty are the two I am really curious about. Outside of the gold there are two peace dollars, 1924 s and 1928 s (which the 1928 s came out of an ICG ms 64 slab, I'm curious how that will go) and an 1888 o morgan that has a chance of ms 66 but probably a 65. I prefer NGC over PCGS and yes, I am curious if it will cross over. I did make a mistake though with my previous post, it was in a VF damaged holder from PCGS, not XF. In hand my coin has a fair amount of luster on the reverse and some around the date on the obverse. I am hoping for a high VF or low XF. In a few weeks though I will know.
It actually said "reversed tooled". So maybe somebody can find something? Both grading companies did.
