Do you think this 3c silver is a proof coin? Why or why not? I didn't think proofs would have the rim issues this one has (split rim @3o'clock on obv and 9o'clock on rev). Also, what's the deal with the flatness under the date? Thanks http://cgi.ebay.com/1861-Three-Cent...3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:1|39:1|240:1318
I wish that I could put my finger on it, but I doubt it is a proof. Strike seems weak. As for the rim near the date, I started to say rim clip, but it is okay on the reverse. Therefore, a big? could be that something was removed (damage) from the obverse? Or ---?
This seller seems to have a lot of rare "proofs" for sale; and they usually go for a boatload of money. Personally, I'd rather have mine TPG slabbed. Too much risk otherwise, especially since they are so rare. As for this one, I couldn't tell you.
No, the reverse is not fully struck. Note that the round domes are not full inside the ornaments on the C. and that they seem smaller and unequal in size. I think the coin probably has reflective surfaces from being repolished but the detail isn't there to be a proof.
I do recall that the proof diagnostic on these is a razor-sharp strike, the best place to look being the bundle of arrows, look at the feathers on the back of the arrow bundle. If you want to learn about Trimes, I suggest you check out Scarsdale Coin, they are THE Trime dealer out there and Jon over there has an amazing inventory of them. Their website is scarsdalecoin.com
I tend to give the seller the benefit of the doubt. In this case the reverse weakness (which could be from a polished die) doesn't bother me. I've seen worse strikes on proof 3CSs before, and the photos make it difficult to tell just how mirrored/prooflike the coin is in-hand. So, I'm leaning towards a proof, but not sure either way.
I lean towards proof- I'm no expert!- because of the wire rims, and overall everything is sharp except in some very small areas, and B.S. trimes are known for weakness in the shield, large star, and small stars.
I've bought several items from GSC. They always seem to look better in the pics than in real life. Not that they were bad coins, but their photos are almost "too" good. Combined with the fact that the coins go for way too much money, I usually stay away from them. Admittedly though I like to browse there selection from time to time.
