Looks like an early American bust cent. You can see it says America on the bottom tight of the reverse.

Yes, I see America on it. But, it was found in France during the war. I told her it was AMERICA but, she insisted it was from France. What was the years they were minted? This one looks like 1890 would that fall in the years they were minted in the U.S. ?

Well they stopped minting large cents in 1857 so it would have to be older than that. I'd say early 1800's.

1780 with good lighting and 20X mag I read 1780 would that be a correct date? Could it be that old? Well, she wouldn't take nothing under $5 dollars for it. I gave her $10 cause I had no change. Was it a good buy?

I don't think its 1780 cause the us didn't really make coins until I think 1792.

The draped bust cents were made from 1796 to 1807. From what I see on this one I believe it is an 1800 and the die variety is S-190. I can't be absolutely sure with those pictures but I think the odds are fairly good.

It is real, from the US, and in FR-2 condition. I'm not good with early US coins, but it's from the late 1700s to early 1800s. The coin might've been used as a currency during the French Revolution............similar time period

Looks like 180 something for the date. And last year of minting was 1807 (1796-1807). Definitely not French, no matter what the person thinks based on where it was found. Coins travel with people.

1798 there are 2 deep dents in the 9 or could be 1803 but the second number is flat on the top which i believe to be a 7 Picture 630.jpg

Regarding the date. You might try photographing it with the light source at the bottom and at the level of the coin/date. That may make the date show better.

I called the previous owner, she said it was in a hard plastic case that read 1799 but she took it out years ago because the case was so scratched up you couldn't see the coin and stated still again that it's French. I told her O.K. it's French! Picture 634.jpg I tried the angle of light you said, does this help.

yes, it helps. I can clearly see the 3rd number is 9 (curved top, can't be an 8) and can see where the 2nd number is a 7 most likely, which makes it 179 something. I was incorrect before.

PS, some people, once they "know" something, can't ever consider another possibility except for the person telling them different to be wrong. So, to her, it's French.

    I think I see a 9 and an 8 so I'll have to guess 1798.

Wonder if the "hard plastic case" could have been a TPG slab or an Airtite. Either way, I'm sure her wanting to look at the coin took precedence over what was with it that might document it (based only on things you've said so far). Anyhow, you have the coin, and in the condition it is in (if a normal 1798), it seems to be about what a dealer might pay for it, from what I can see. If it is a 1799, you got it way low price. Dealer price for 2012 Blue Book for a 1799 normal date is 650, and for a 9 over 8 is 700 (for AG3)

She called back, she said she found case, she's said it says 1799/8 does she mean it's a 9 or could an 8? Anyway when she comes back into town she said she will bring the case to me. She also asked if I would give her a $100 for 4 Indian Head Cents in a display case dates are marked on the case 1869 1877 1908 S 1909 S I said, I will give you $200 for them.

Great, if the coin is a 1799/8 and the case is a tpg slab, You might want to have it reslabbed. It will cost you to send the coin in and insure it with registered mail, but would be worth it based on what you seem to have. Also, if it is real, and she has the other coins, then certainly if you think they are real, make her a decent offer.
