Hi Everyone, Along with my passion for collecting coins I also collect 1oz, .999 fine silver bars like the one pictured. Does anyone else on the forum collect these..?
Neat bar, catman. I don't collect bars, but I do have an accumulation of silver rounds. Most have an historical theme. I really love the look of silver. It can be dazzling.
Hi catman...Nope, I don't collect the silver bars but have looked at the one you posted several times. My husband has 2 corvettes and I've thought several times about getting him the bars with his respective cars on them. Might be a nice way to get him hooked in this fine hobby with me . I've already got Joe...he's next! Hee he he he
Yes, I do. I am not an active collector -- but I am not an active collector of anything, really; I just write. Even so, silver is always worth its weight and when I see a bar or round I like, I buy it. If I were to group them all, there are: (1) Patriotics (2) Banks (3) Other businesses Among the Patriotics, I include New Mexico in particular and Frontier, generally. One of these crosses with (2) being a Bank from New Mexico. Item (3) is pretty easy when the business is, say, a dentist, but is harder to tell from (2) when the business is Monex or Engelhard. There, also, Engelhard's "Prospector" rounds took their obverses from the California Commemorative coin of the US Mint. So, is this a Bank, or a Patriotic? As with any area of collecting, it is up to the collector to define. I do pay attention to the issuer. The "Flying F/M" of the Franklin Mint is a hallmark I trust. Silvertowne is another. I mentioned Monex and Engelhard, already, but you do have to be careful not to buy just any old thing with "Engelhard" scrawled across it. I believe that these privately issued coins (which is what they are: coins) show that we do not really need a government Mint, but that is just a matter of personal political philosophy.
I'll occasionally pick up bars and rounds if I've never seen them before or have and interesting theme. I especially like small bars of odd weights.
Hey catman! I finally made it over here. Yes, I collect a few silver bars since you are one the one's that got me started. I picked up a set of the American Flags in a presentation box that looks really nice. coinsngolf
I guess I just got hung up on the bars before the rounds were even considered. I have a few of the rounds also. Anything with a Cat on it I go for catman
Don't want to get off topic, but I just wanted to mention that we have 7 cats. Would that be a collection, or an accumulation?
I never intended to collect silver bars, it just kind of happened. My parents had a large collection of them, but sold most of them off during the late 70s-early 80s silver boom. Most of what I have has been gifts, and before I knew it, I had a small hoard going. I think it started with the Happy Birthday one my dad got me a few years ago. Funny how these things happen... I sometimes buy my wife a silver round for our anniversary, or her birthday. Also, have several of the one ounce bars. Don't really collect, just buy one occasionally if I like it, or for a gift.
FOR ONE OF THE BIGGEST COLLECTORS & SELLERS OF BARS AND ROUNDS, CONTACT THE WEB SITE www.sacvalcc.org I' not sure of his name but he is a member of the Sacramento Valley Coin Club. He is also a Power Seller of rounds and bars on EBAY.
I had a couple of bars with the Morgan obverse/reverse on the front. I can't remember who manufactured them. I had a couple of others at one time. The last one I had was the Redbook medallion silver round. (Don't have that one anymore, but it went to a good home )
silver bars I don't have too many art craft bars but I do like the older 10 oz bars as long as they arn't fake. Some low life people seem to enjoy runing a good thing.
I have a 10 oz. bar that I won on a tip board at work. Never considered the possibility that it could be a fake. How does one go about reassuring themselves that it is genuine? It is a Johnson Matthey bar with the ser. # 560419.
At the risk of stating the obvious - the first step is weight. 10 troy ounces is 311 grams, or a hair less than 11 avoir. ounces.
I've seen few fake bars. Most are base metal which are marked as being 1 Oz silver. The double eagle presidential series has been said to be plagued by such issues. There are also some old bars that are faked but usually are good silver, they just aren't really old. Many 100 Oz Engelhardt bars have three large holes drilled through them lenghtwise and the silver replaced with a base metal. These bars are virtually impossible to detect by sight or weighing. They are usually found because they don't "ring" properly.
