I had forgot I had a coin set my deceased Father-in-law had and I can't find an answer to if these coins have any real silver. It is an American Mint set of 12 coins, 9 are $20 Liberian marked, 2 minted directly by American Mint and one $10, all say they are 20g .999 silver, the $10 is 8.5g .999 silver. is this true? Coins doe not have the weight on them and the only silver mark is the 2 non-liberian and they are stamped .999. as they are from American Mint I am skeptical. Anyone know for sure or had any of these tested before for silver content?
I'll have to admit that I don't know for sure. But you also said that they are stamped 0.999. Is this found on the edge of the coin? If so, that's a good indication that they have real silver in them. There are plenty of silver rounds on the market like this. The best way to determine their silver content is take them to a dealer or a show and ask them what they'd pay for them. Then you have market value. So I'd be inclined to believe the data given to you.
The 2 non-liberian coins are marked on the reverse with .999, the rest do not have this. And the COA state .999 then under weight says 20g, ect, I am just skeptical as the way the COA is written could mean that the coin is 20g and contains .999 silver but may only be plated in .999 silver, rest may be clad.
Well it would help if you could tell us exactly what the COA says. As for the Liberian pieces Dates and denominations please?
The Liberian ones are all 2000 $20 except a JFK $10 piece. COA Says: Limitation: 9999 complete collections Material: .999 silver Weight: 20 g Issue year: 2000 Diameter: 40 mm Quality: proof
The American mint did strike a series of $10 and $20 coins for Liberia. I don't see a listing for a 2000 JFK, but there are two 1999 JFK coins. The weights on the JFK's don't seem to match up. They do have a lot of designs for 2000 $20 .999 fine silver with a weight of 20 grams and 40 mm diameter. So I would say they are probably what they claim to be. 20 grams of .999 silver. (There are a group of silver 2000 $10 coins at 8.5 grams but I don't see a JFK among them.)
That's a great help. I'll have to check that jfk again as I may have looked at it wrong. Guess I'll take it to my dealer and see if he will take them. I just wanted to be sure so I didn't waste his time and mine.
Did you end up finding anything out about these coins? I ran into these as well and am curious about them....
