I bought this coin today and noticed that it has a rotated die. Does this add any value or subtract value? What are your thoughts?
I think that it could be for someone if their willing to pay more . I personally think that to the degree that it is the coin becomes more desirable , if that makes sense .
From what I learned from reading this forum is yes it's adds value & that seems like a strong enough rotation. I'm just wondering how they grade it then not look at the back & add a designation. Although I can't say I've seen any post of graded rotation before.
I think it depends. For hammered world coins (~1600s), the relative rotation of the two sides was pretty haphazard most of the time, so I doubt that a mismatch would add any significant value. This Cromwell 1/2 crown was rotated by almost 90 degrees off, for example. For modern coins, rotation errors are probably a lot rarer, and should command a premium. It would depend on the issuer, frequency of rotation errors and the strength of the collector's market for that particular type of coin. I know major off-center hole errors can command a big premium for Japanese coins, for example. Here's a Taisho year 11 (1922) 10 sen with a modestly off-center hole found by chance. Not dramatic enough to be worth much. Modern Japan errors are scarcer and more collected. But Japan has a well-developed domestic coin collector's market including for error coins.
If you send a coin for grading the person has to also pay a fee for attribution/designation of errors or varieties. You don't pay then it won't get attributed.
Generally, it needs to be rotated >45 degrees to start generating interest, but you may get a small premium IF you can find the right buyer
These are a bit like clash marks and die cracks. Some folks like them and others don't care for them. Some will pay a premium. I enjoy them and will pay a little extra for something that's different than the normal. I bought a Seated Half a while back. It was a pretty coin but I bought it because it had a 180 rotation. Didn't really need it but it just struck me as being a bit cool.
