Do 200x RPM's really exist?

I thought the mint changed their ways and didn't repunch mint marks. Looking though my nickels I've found a 2001-d, 2002-d, and a 2003-d all with a doubled mint mark. I even found a doubled 2002-P. Searching the net, I haven't found any sites that talk about these years.

My scanner isn't all that great but I hope you can see some of what I'm looking at. Also, what is the best way to scan mint marks without pixelation?

It is my understanding that since 1990, the mintmarks are made directly onto the dies, therefore no true RPM's are possible now.

Your coins do show what appears to be machanical doubling, that results from a "bouncing" effect of the die striking the planchet, then rebounding and striking the coin again.

Keep in mind, I am not an error expert, and am basing this on what I have learned from others.

The forum host should drop by soon and tell you for sure what the situation is with your nickels. He is a CONECA board member, and has much more experience with errors than me.

Although not an expert , I concur with jody,, Mechanical doubling .

There is a good thread on the differences in the main coin forum.
