A friend has ask while looking for Morgans to look for a common date, PCGS MS65 or higher DMPL CAC Morgan. Not finding hardly any, I checked on a auction site of past auctions for this type of coin and it appears only about 1 in 10 will receive the CAC sticker. Thought there would be more than this, any ideas why it's harder to get a CAC sticker on the MS65 or higher DMPL?
I'd agree with Lehigh. I own 3, and none have the CAC sticker. I don't know if they've even been submitted to CAC. I don't believe it will be easy to find one. Thankfully, your friend didn't require it to be in an OGH as well. I have a registry set of Morgans and I don't see MS65 DPL's very often. The ones that do come up at times are frequently out of my price range. I just did a quick search of the Heritage Auction Archives. Based on your friends requirements, they only have auctioned 1,386 of them. They've only auctioned 2,494 MS65 DPL's in any holder and 9,927 DPL's in any grade/holder. Those records go back to 1995. I'm sure there is some duplication too: same coins being sold. I just wanted to give you a little idea of what your friend is asking.
It is my observation that the TPG standards for what constitutes a DMPL have changed and that they are tighter today than in many times in the past. Therefore, it might very well be that many coins in DMPL holders might not either achieve that designation if regraded today or that they fall short of what CAC wants in a DMPL.
