Hi, i have a bag of coins(SBA Dollars) that have been exposed to moisture. I was wondering what kind of solution to use for the clad SBA dollar? What brand & where can i purchase some? I've never dipped a coin, i assume that i need some coin tongs & something to pat the coins down. I want to put them into airtite holders after dipping, so i probably need a long drying time. I can use some advise on the solution & the dipping technique. Thanks!

I think it would depend on what's actually on the coin. If you could post a picture of an example it might be helpful to determine how to best mend the situation. I have very limited experience with dipping (acetone is about it)...but pics should be helpful.

    Some people like SBA's ;)

depending on what kind of water damage has occurred.. it may not come off.

Im recently bought some really nice peace dollars that had gotten wet at some point... nothing took the water spots off, coin dip, acetone, soap and water... nothing... so depending on the damage it may or may not be fixable.

I agree AUB2- water damage from the chemicals in water- calcium, magnesium, chlorine, etc are reactive and leave little whitish cirlces in my experience. Nothing gets it off. Try to use Jewel Luster or EZest on one of them just to learn. Those coins can't be worth a lot anyway.

Spend them and buy some real collector coins.

Spend them and buy some real collector coins. That's what I would so as fast as possible - I mean they were damaged when they left the mint and they ain't going to ever get any better - we are kind of lucky we can get a dollar for them if you ask me.

    Moisture damage

Thanks! I purchased this bag knowing that they were wet. Seller had opened a companion bag showing varying degrees of damage. I have'nt opened my bag yet though, i assume the same as sellers other bag. I did'nt purchase the SBA dollars with a big profit in mind. I figure they would be great coins to learn dip methods, and better determine what can be returned through dipping. I'm thinking that the clad SBA might handle moisture better than a silver peace dollar. With a dollar face value i surely won't lose much on the deal, Maybe i should self slab them as they are. Sell them as shipwreck recovery coins! The legend of the lost SBA dollars! Enclose a dvd showing the bag being removed from the Lbster tank at Red Lobster!

The Sac dollars have a clad layer of manganese and brass (copper/zinc). Brass is relatively resistance to tarnish, but the manganese causes much of the darkening. The manganese may give a "gold" look to new coins, it readily oxidizes. I know of no "dip" which is designed to remove manganese based tarnish other than rather strong acids. If someone has experience contrawise, I also would like to know for my knowledge.

I don't agree with that. For example this gives someone something to do with any excessive battery acid laying around. If you happen to have some left over Drano, this too gives you something to do with that.
Of couse I would really prefer to throw them into a wishing well and wish for real coins. :goofer::)

Hydrogen Peroxide or lighter fluid (also known as "goo gone") work great on copper.
