Dipped/Plated/Reprocessed Merc??

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by William DeBerry, Aug 17, 2013.

  1. I was just now looking through my dimes and came across this one, never noticed it before, but I was looking at how nice and shiny it was and started looking closer, and on the reverse some of the details are not there in the fasces, which leads me to believe it has been plated. I have not looked at it under magnification and the photo may not be of the best quality, but I hope it is enough.

What exactly has been done to this dime??

Your coins has been cleaned. Worth only melt value.

If you use it as silver solder you might realize a value higher than melt :)

  8. Well.. I am not THAT upset. I bought it in a lot of dimes at 14x face and the LCS is buying them at 16x face, at least as of right now, so.. Thanks for the replies.

If someone was going to plate it
    they would have maximized their
creation by cutting the bands in
first with an Xacto knife. And if was
plated it wouldn't be showing dirt.

On second thought there's not much band
    there to cut into.

It is unusual to find plated Mercs, unlike plated steel Lincoln cents that are quite common. The coin in the image appears cleaned and/or polished.
