What with the major mints having issues with spots, is it a good/bad/indifferent idea to quickly dip a coin in MS70, acetone, or something similar prior to submission, if the coin currently has no spots? PCGS is apparently doing this to some ASEs. The coin I'm specifically talking about is a silver 2012 proof (*NOT* ASE).
Just thought maybe a good idea because it seems that some spots are developing after being slabbed. If maybe it was some contaminant on the coin future issues could be headed off at the pass? Anyone else?
I haven't read much about the milk spots that appear on these coins occasionally, but from what I've read, it seems like the proofs aren't affected as significantly. Don't dip, is my opinion.
I would be afraid to dip a proof coin. I would be afraid to get a purple slab on a 2012 coin too, unless it was something REAL special.
That depends on what you use on the coin. But more than that, the only coins ever run through the sniffer are those that are submitted under the Secure Plus grading tier. And only a very small percentage of coins are ever submitted under that tier. Bottom line, the sniffer never sees 95% or more of all coins submitted.
