Ok, I remember this puzzle being difficult in high school, but it may not be now. Regardless, I thought I would try it:

I have went on a random number generator to pick a number 0-9999 To win the contest, you simply have to guess this number within 20 guesses. With each guess, I'll give you two numbers. The first will be the number of digits in your guess that is contained within the number picked by the random number generator. The second number will be the number of digits in your guess that is in the correct number slot. Confused? Let's do an example!

    If the number is 2234:

One may guess 6789 of which I'll reply 0,0 (0 numbers from the guess 6789 are contained within my number of 2234 and 0 numbers from the guess 6789 are in the correct spots)

One may guess 4567 of which I'll reply 1,0. The 4 is in the wrong spot but is contained within my number. However there are no numbers in the correct spots.

One may guess 1243 of which I'll reply 2,1. The 4 and 3 are in my number of 2234 but are in the wrong spot. The 2 is in my number and is in the correct spot.

Get the idea? If not let me know and I'll try to explain it in more detail through a PM.

Little clues: There are four digits...always. Guesses of "5" for example will be read as 0005. There is some strategy. You can take 20 random guesses or wait until I reply with the hints. Either way works. I'll try to keep up with the guesses, but I do go on my clinical rounds and need sleep, so keep checking as I can't keep watch all the time. Lastly, if no one guesses within 20 guesses or 4 days, whichever comes first, the closest number to the one generated will win.

Ok, I think that about sums it up. Those eligle to play include:

So I can keep guessing up to 20 times in this thread? I don't need to wait for others to post?

Nope...up to 20 times whenever you please. You can wait for my response or just guess. It's up to you, krispy.

You are going to have to explain how you can have no right numbers but 2 in the right place. That makes no sense.

Well at least we know there are no threes

Referring to Krispy's guess, petro? It simply means the 3 is correctly in the thousandths place, the 6 correctly in the hundreths, the 4 correctly in the tens or the 3 in the ones place.

In the guess 3890, it simply means that there are no numbers that are incorrectly placed that are also in my number, but there are 2 numbers that are correctly placed that are also in my number. Still confused or are we good?

Using the example I used in the rules. If someone would guess 2299, I would reply 0,2 because in comparing to 2234, both 2 and 2 are in the correct spots but there are no other numbers that are shared between the numbers that are in wrong spots. Essentially, the game is over when I reply 0,4 because all four will be in the correct spot and no numbers will be misplaced.
