Dime with a copper face

    Hello,

Several years ago, I found a very much uncirculated 1996P dime where the obverse side is completely missing the the zinc layer and appears to have been struck on copper. The inverse side of the coin looks like a standard dime. It also seems to me to be slightly thinner than a standard dime. I am looking for two things: If this apparent error has a proper name, and what the approximate value of the coin may be.

The first picuture is a detailed picture of the dime, and the second picture has a regular dime beside it for comparison.

If you would like to see more pictures, then please let me know.

I agree that this coin looks real....this error can be faked.
Two tips....don't clean it and hold it by the rim (Edge) as if you don't fingerprints will come on the coin and it will lower the value.

I would guess the value about $20-$30.

If it weighs about 1.88 grams (as opposed to the normal 2.28 grams), then it is missing the obverse clad layer. In uncirculated condition it should be worth about $50.

I think you should send it back to the Mint for completion. If you bought a new car and they forgot the steering wheel, wouldn't you want the factory to add it back on the car? If you bought a house with no roof wouldn't you want the builder to add it on? If you bought a stick of dynomite with no wick, wouldn't you want the factory to add one on? :smile :smile
For real at coins shows it would really be worth lots if real. Sure looks real but I understand there are nuts that somehow melt a layer off coins for fun.

Carl has the idea. Tell the mint you are tired of poor merchandise and you want a complete dime, not the
hal-faced one you got. I have a dime that's struck (both correct obverse and reverse) on just the outer layer. Maybe I have your missing layer. lol They wouldn't replace mine either.
