Legend Numismatics has purchased the famous 10C 1894-S PCGS BM PR64+ Daggett Specimen from David Lawrence Rare Coins for a sum in excess of $2 million, a record price for any dime. Researchers believe that there were only twenty-four dimes mint in 1894 at the San Francisco mint that have the 'S" mint mark. Today there are only ten confirmed specimens remaining. This specimen in particular can be traced back to the Mint Superintendent, John Daggett, who was in charge of the San Francisco Mint in 1894. As to why only twenty-four coins were minted, nobody knows. The coin is currently ranked #4 in the "100 Greatest U.S. Coins" (Third Edition, Garrett, 2008)
