I was really hoping this thread went a little farther than it did. There were some interesting topics brought up by a few members. I was hoping that I could comment, but it seems a few members went over board. Did I miss the usual blatant banter or just a member that should know better overstepping the rules? Anyways those dimes were more than altered. Here is a 2021 that I got a couple weeks ago. What is going on with this one? And could you give it a mint state grade?
It appears that @James p Wherry used the second of his first two posts as a newcomer to CT to use bad language, and so many people quoted his post that one of the mods had to work overtime editing all of the quotes that cited his bad language. As a result, the thread was locked. I guess it's a good thing I'm not a mod because I would have kicked him out of CT. A newcomer has to have a lot of nerve to think he can get away with that. As for your dime @Pickin and Grinin it looks like some grease and debris may have compacted into a thin layer, then fell out and was struck into Rosie's bust. This is just a guess.
If you look closely the scratch goes over the M in Dime. That makes it PMD. I would encourage you to find out what Mint state looks like on a coin. Buy some mint rolls. The value in coins is Mint State, Some Au's bring a premium, but not very regular on moderns.
I fully agree on the struck thru. What is interesting is what doesn't show in the photo. Maybe a little_____. but hard to justify without in hand inspection. It can be seen on the highest relief of the dies.
I here ya, just passing on that condition is usually the key to seeing errors and variety's. I have sold a few coins, and my enthusiasm isn't tied to the resale.
Not 100% certain what the ruled of the thread are. I'll offer this up in what I believe the spirit of the thread is..... One of the very few coins I have plucked from circulation. I found it interesting anyway. Just a simple MAD Rosie.
The OP asked for it with an unfortunate choice of words and some of us just weren't taking it. I like the call by the ump, there, it shows he was on his toes.
It's a die issue. The dies were beat up. Nothing was altered and it does look MS to these old peepers.
Nice coin. I don't think anybody knows what this thread it about just yet, we're still working on that...
Yes the dies were a little beat up, A lot of dimes and quarters from the D mint look like this. I tend to find them every year. It is a strike thru. What is interesting on this one is what looks like a light die polishing in the temple and on the cheek bone area. (at least in hand). My guess is that it would grade down at MS60 or MS61 if it was sent in.
Struck through grease/debris, I agree. On the grade, technically, it's all there. This one just never had the chance to show what it's got, for this bad start. I also agree, they'll likely make the market grade suffer for it. I'd technical grade it and describe the die issue, but then, I'm not them.
As a rule, it would be considered impolite to hijack the thread of another, but since the OP didn't object to @PamR doing it, I guess it is okay for you as well.
I would never do that. I am fully aware that it is rude.... I was under the impression that @Pickin and Grinin was attempting to start a thread about dime errors and a previous discussion was thrown off track by an argument. If my assumption was in error, I do apologize for the de-rail. It was not my intent.
You know guys, Pickin titled this thread “Dime Dime Thread” and due to someone else cursing and causing problems, I innocently posting thinking it is about dimes. I think some need to read the etiquette manual because I can pull several threads that you are not exactly in the “ rule of thumb”. If Pickin had issues with me I would hope he would confront me.
