dime cliped?

    I found this one in a roll contaning all of the same date, here are pictures of the coin, it appears to have no saw marks and no bending marks, It is exactaly a 90 degrees. Ideas, comments.

    I'll let others who know about these say for sure - but looks like post mint damage to me.

    I think it is post mint damage because it does not show the Blakesly effect.

    From the looks of it, this would appear to be a natural defect in the planchet. You could term it a "ragged notch". If the microscopic texture on the vertical edge of the angular gap is grainy, that would verify its status as a natural defect. If the edge shows mechanical damage (scrapes, striations), that may indicate it is an artificial defect. It may be a form of pre-strike damage or even an "assay clip" ("inside corner clip"). Ultimately, it may take examination under a hand lens or microscope to nail down its true identity.

    I just got a Pennslyvania state quarter with exactly the same type of clip . Ill post the pic when I get home tonight. I was wondering the same thing. Hmmm..
