I've gotten 2 PCGS slabs recently that don't fit in the 20 slab boxes. Is something different, or did I get some bogus stuff. One of the coins is just a newer silver eagle, so I would think a low value item like that would be genuine. Any thoughts, or am I just noticing a slab change that happened a while back.
As far as I can recall PCGS has never varied the size of their slabs. While NGC on the other hand - has. Some older NGC slabs are noticeably thicker and usually referred to as a "fatty". And there's a lot of boxes they won't fit into. You mention the boxes, who made those boxes ? I ask because not all slab boxes are the same. And I suppose it's possible even if unlikely that some boxes could have been in error in regard to sizing. Have you tried a different box ?
The coins look good and check out according to the numbers on the slab. They are just a bit wider or thicker than normal. They flex the plastic on the boxes to the point of breaking if I forced them in. Anyone else have any experience with this happening.
I've tried another box. Both NGC and PCGS boxes. I've never had slabs that didn't slide right in those things interchangeably.....till now.
Mystery is solved. I'm an idiot! Apparently I wasn't using the boxes as interchangeably as I thought. I called PCGS and they made the slabs wider a year or so ago. So they won't fit in a NGC box anymore, but it fit in a PCGS box just fine. Should have done a tiny bit more checking myself.
The new PCGS fatter slabs will also fit in an NGC box if you put them in diagonally across two slots. In other words, left side of slab in slot 1, right side in slot 2 on opposite side. You can only fit 19 slabs into a box meant for 20, but this makes it so you can still put them in NGC boxes -- because the PCGS boxes suck (the damned lids never stay closed, and NGC slabs don't fit properly because they are too tall).
