Teletrade is like Heritage---more professional.....more $$$ coins along with cheapies.... They also charge a buyers fee...of 15% so watch out for that-- I joined teletrade a few months ago and am glad I did as they seem to be a good company. Speedy
Less chance of getting cheated by the seller on teletrade for one. All coins are slabbed, as far as I know. You get to see what the last several coins of that grade by the same grader have traded for. I've only ever seen PCGS, NGC, ANAC and ICG slabs. There could be others but I haven't seen them. And what I especially like is the pics are good. I've seen a lot of really nice coins trading there. The buyers premium is high for my taste, but I'm not rich either.
Yes take the buyers fees into account when bidding. Also Teletrade only list certified coins and they must be certified but the top 4 companies. You can submit raw coin through teletrade for certification and sale on Teletrade. Teletrade also post the discription so your most likley (can't saw it never happens) not to get coins that have PVC growth after slabbing or other problems. They along with Heritage have great research tools for finding out current pricing trends and great photos. But, have to say it again if you are buying take the fees into account or you'll be shocked. I bid on 3 coins about 6 weeks ago lost the one I wanted and won 2 at $6.00 each, well at this point it's not 12% its a minimum of $8.00 per lot so when all said and done with S&H my total was $32.25, but the coins are nice and one is a RPM that was not attributed on the holder. Ebay on the other hand as Treasurehunt says is ebay. I love ebay and have gotten some fantastic deals and buy most of my coins there but really have to beware, there are a lot of thiefs hanging out there.
Like others here, I've used Ebay to purchase coins and, so far, have not been burned. Nickelman's post reminds me of a question I have. Has this group created a list of dealers (other than EstateDoctor and their various aliases) that are questionable? That are trustworthy? I think this would be a valuable service to each other if we could create a list of known shady dealers. That would at least allow us to avoid the known scam artists (understanding that new shady characters will always be around). Any way, food for thought.
There is a list of good dealers---of course no list is complete but this is a good one! http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=14152 Speedy
I still don't get why everyone makes a big deal out of buyer's fees. The companies have to make money too and the buyer's fee makes no difference as to what you're willing to pay for a coin. It does matter as to how much you're willing to bid on a coin though. When I'm bidding on Teletrade or Heritage, I decide what price I'm not willing to go over for a coin. Then, each time I bid, I figure up what I'd have to pay in total with my bid, buyer's fee and shipping...If the total comes in at or under what I'm willing to pay for a coin, then I bid. If not, I pass. Simple. Oh, and I love Teletrade. It's probably my favorite place to buy coins. I also like Heritage, but don't have quite as much experience with their services.
Might be a little off-topic here but Teletrade has a User Survey going on with a bunch of prizes. As I recall the top prize is $2500 to spend on Teletrade.
All the buyer's premium means is you need to do the calculation in determining your highest bid. Everyone else is doing the same, so there's theoretically no difference in the end. If you register with Teletrade now they might give you $50 off if you make a winning bid before the end of the month.
Everyone has the right to their own opinion... Myself, I think there are some pretty good buys to be had there... Way better than if you went to local shops around here and in many places... Not that I have anything against the local shops.. I dig the ones I been in, just not that good of a selection... I've made over a 100 purchases in the last two years (2005-2006) there (not all coin related)... I feel a few of them were a tad high, but that was my fault for clicking "Buy It Now" or getting caught up in the thrill of a last minute Score/Bidding War... Besides one or two guys taking a day or two longer to ship than I'd thought they should, becasue I'm way too impulsive, I've had nothing but great experiences there and I've got my hands on things I would have never got local... Why does it seem like a lot of people hate E-bay??? Are there that many people getting ripped off? Item prices too High??? Seller fees too high??? Or they just not finding what they want on there? Just wanting to jump on the Bandwagon and hate a large popular company? Something else I haven't thought of???
smullen: some replies, but not all the answers: Why does it seem like a lot of people hate E-bay??? It is convenient, and they do not treat the little guy fairly, see episode post by Zaneman and his experiences. Are there that many people getting ripped off? Yes and yes. Also, uneducated sellers, with stupid descriptions, (everything is rare, if is is prior to the year 2000.) overgrading, no GOOD system of having fakes removed (the ANA is useless as, well you know the expression). Item prices too High??? Prices can be fair, but sellers can rip off uneducated sellers, Caveat emptor is the word of the day. Seller fees too high??? WAY TOO HIGH! And gettin ghigher every quarter (or so it seems) Paypay is a rip off, you pay the extra if you accept cahrge cards, but they also charge you extra for cash. Or they just not finding what they want on there? It is there, just not well described. Just wanting to jump on the Bandwagon and hate a large popular company? Sure, why not, at least perhaps we'll keep them somewhat honest. Something else I haven't thought of??? Most everything, there is no real buyer protections from con artists and crooks, they do not listen to complaints esp of sellers who do a lot of business. In general, they have gotten too big, too fast, and forgot who they need the most, the buyers. Without buyers the sellers can just whistle.
I took this to mean that Teletrade is a real Coin related company. They cater to the coin collecting community, they have reps at the larger shows and deal primarily with only coins (although they have tried to venture into sports cards). And ebay per say is not a coin company but are only a conduit for sellers of everything and everything. I think if ebay would be more aggressive with some of the known thiefs (Aboncom rings a bell) it would go a long way with collectors. That being said there are many reputable coin dealers doing business on Ebay. But alot of down right thiefs and dishonest dealers. I've overheard many a dealers talking at coin shows one to another about taking a problem coin and selling it on ebay. I still love ebay and check it for everything (no joking I even bought my kitchen sink on ebay) and have purchased many coins and have had great success but have returned many coins as well. I love Teletrade as well and have gotten great deals there as well including the buyers fee.Maybe their starting price on everything should be $8.00 and go up from there. It would accomplish the same thing but always be in the forefront instead of an after thought for some.
I must be really dense. When I go to Teletrade, I can never figure anything out...how to search, bid, whatever. I know it can't be that complicated, so maybe it's just a congenital defect on my part. Given a seller I know and trust, I would much rather buy on eBay. To me, the auction layout is clearer and more informative, and all the specifics such as bidding time, etc., are all laid out for me to see right there on the page. I like eBay, though I rarely buy anything there anymore except for little stuff.
Teletrade is very simple to use. Go here and click on any of the auctions listed under Browse Upcoming Auctions (Bid Now!) on the left. Then, click on a category of coin to browse, like $5 Gold and poof!, you're there. Go here to search for previous prices realized on any coins you like. If you want to search farther back than 60 days, just Register and Login. On this page, you can find all of the information you need about fees, shipping costs, etc. All of this is easily accessible from their homepage.
Have to say that it looks very good only drawback is that it dont take international bids just US & Canada De Orc
Steve, here's an alternative to both eBay & Teletrade; www.coinbay.biz .Any vendor or buyer from any country can register. You don't even need a piece of hard plastic money to be registered, but it is a good idea, especially if you are NOT taking PayPal. Aidan.
