Hi, Here's a 2018 D Minnesota Voyageurs Quarter. The streaks on this quarter look like they are under the lettering on the reverse side. I don't know if it was just made by something after the minting process or during the minting process? And if there's any value besides it just being worth a quarter?
Welcome to CT! It happened after it left the Mint...probably from a coin rolling machine (it was the end coin).
Wait one, click on the image and it blows up, look at the outer ring on 'Pluribus' (photo 1) and the lines go underneath the lettering, now whether it is a intentional design or touching up the die with a heavy hand, I have no idea. I don't collect these so nothing to compare with , but if that is not what the poster was asking about, I do not know. Jim P.S. added ~ I do not think it would be a die streak as I know them.
Well, OK, if you think that, then please explain how you think that happened during the minting process. It's clearly something that happened ex-the minting process.
I do not have one of these with me to look at. But my recollection is that the lettering on these is incused. If lettering is incused and damage occurs through that lettering, how would it appear any differently?
If the lettering is inclused, the letters would be raised on the die, and there would be grooves on the bottom of the letters if die polished, and there should be spacing without grooves in the areas closed to the lettering, and I do not see that, they almost or do touch. I guess that leaves the planchet, or something I missed. Must be simple , those always gets me. Jim
Jim, the legend on the reverse of the ATB quarters is raised on the die....recessed on the coin. So, it is reasonably possible that the damage would pass over the legend without damaging it. Chris Oops! I misread your comment. Please ignore my response.
If you look at all of our forums there is one called Error Coins.. Please post any future thread you create there.. First figure out what you have. Worry about value last.. Most Minor errors have little or no premium at all!... Just a suggestion. I'm not trying to be bossy.
