A fellow member asked me to post some photos of some of my die gouge coins , so here they are. My photography skills is not very good, I hope you can see the photos.the first two photos are of California quarters it looks like John Murel has a dagger in his hand in the first photo and in the second photo it looks like he has thrown the dagger at the condor bird . this is almost comical how these die gouges can appear this way. the 2005 nickle is a P mint coin. the fourth photo shows a fairely large die gouge that makes it look like a torpedo is going thru the water towards the loon bird.this is the only one of these I found from a full box of new quarters. the last photo shows what looks like a extra wave above the loon bird's tail.this one may be a die crack.
Thanks Rascal. However, after you said "I have a few state quarters with better looking die gouges than the Wisconsin ones and they don't have much value because they are too scarce and have not been hyped up.", I guess I was hoping for something a little more dramatic.
Coin varieties need a name!! "Low Leaf", "High Leaf", "Sixth Finger", "Wide AM", "Close AM", "Type B" etc. ...something that makes it easy to talk about. The first one might be "Bob Dole's Pen". The one below that might be "The Floating Stick". ...and so on.
The dagger in hand gouge is cool, the others are just random floating gouges IMO. They aren't uncommon, however in reference to the Wisconsin Leaf, That looks truly like a leaf, not just some random line. Thats why its gotten a lot of popularity. Here's an example of a die gouge I found, and it could be called "Cow Lick" or "Bad Hair Day" but I dont believe it to be anywhere near as cool as Wisconsin Error.
on the copper plated cents most of the time what appears to be a die gouge is only a plating bubble. I have a lot of these with raised lines going thru Lincoln's profile and they are problably only plating issues.
You could also call it, "the assasination" or whatever. It looks like a bullet is entering lincoln's scull, like when he was shot.
Hey these are about as dramatic as can be found when it comes to die gouges. These are better than my photos shows because the light blocked part of the gouges in the photos. the one with what looks like a torpedo in the lake going towards the loon is my favorite one and I would love to be able to buy or find another one like it. I also like the one with the big die gouge below the condor , I only found two of these from a entire box of new Cal. quarters. The mint workers probably destroyed the rest because they are visible to the naked eye. Does anyone out there have one like this ? The 2005p 5 cent coin with the big die gouge is also a hard to find coin and would make a good match for the D mint speared bison coin .
