I just got around to taking a closer look at a set of Jefferson war nickels I picked up off of eBay a while back. The photo on eBay just showed the 11 flips at such an angle that you really could not see the coins clearly and the description was very vague, but has the curious phrase "looks like they were put away the day after they were made". So I took a chance and ended up winning them at $35 plus shipping. Based on the photos, or lack of photos I don't think too many people were willing to pull the trigger. Well they are all easily MS66 and maybe even higher, and many of them were very clearly FS. As I looked under a loop I saw that the 1944 S has FS, and a die crack on the reverse that runs from 12 o'clock right down through the steps and to the bottom of the coin at the 6 o'clock position. My question regards the die crack going through the steps. Does this effect the FS designation? I will try to get pictures up, but I doubt that my low end camera will pick up the detail that close. By the way, the comment "looks like they were put away the day after they were made" was pretty darn accurate. These are beautiful and I am very, very happy (lucky?).
I'll go out on the limb here and say it will depend on the grader.What you discribed here is not found in the Jefferson Nickel Doubled Die Varieties. ...as others with die cracks are....I have picked up severl set over the years to find that the seller did not know what they really had. If this group of nickels are that good have them graded as they will bring a fair price .Feel free to PM on any other Nickel questions...
Congrat'~ Sounds like a Lucky find! I'd like to see photo(s) of these, if you can? As far as the die/crack running through the steps,? IMO , I haven't seen to many of those around, consider yourself' lucky!
I wouldn't think it would/should affect the FS designation. It either has full steps or it doesn't. The die crack would be wonderful for a specialty collector, but in my eyes it would drop the price a little not the grade...
My 2 cents Sounds like a nice find:thumb::thumb::thumb: can u post a few photos? that way we maybe able to tell you if it is FS & die variety?Full steps on a MS-66 make the price jump rather well! DV not sure?but both would be nice too!:thumb:
