Die crack in proof Kennedy?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by William Reavely, Aug 31, 2017.

  1. Hi Y'all,

My first post! I hope it's a good one.... Just purchased this on Ebay (I didn't know it had the die crack). It looks like a very distinct error to me but I'm a newbie. Will some of you chime in and let me know if it is a die crack and if it is worth more or less than the $2 I paid for it. Thank you in advance for any knowledge you can pass along to me. I love this site!

To my eye it looks like a struck through error (in other words, something was sitting on the die when the planchet was struck, either grease or a fiber or something else.) Is the line raised (metal rises above the fields) or incuse (goes below the surface of the fields.)?

  4. Thank you for the reply stldanceartist! I tried to get a couple of soft/firm objects to "hang up" on the area as I passed them over it. Nothing I tried did. The more I look at it..... It does look like it is below the surface.

For future reference, it's usually not great for coins (especially proofs) to drag/rub anything across the surfaces. A good quality loupe will help you in more ways than one. :)

It looks like it's struck thru a thin piece
    of thread........

  7. Thank you Fred and stl! Any value to this? I'm $2 in to it. Either way it appears to be a one of a kind Kennedy no matter the value.

If you put it up on Ebay, it could
    bring between $20-$25, or thereabouts.

There's no set price for such anomalies,
so it might bring $10, it might bring $30.......

If you want to sell it, Ebay would be about the
only venue for this type of item.

    Hope this helps.

It almost looks raised to me. Put a single light source on it at a shallow angle either to the north or south of the anomaly and take another image, or tell us which side the shadow falls on.

  10. Thanks Justin! I tried many sources of light at many angles and could not produce a shadow.

Then it's probably as suggested above, a strikethrough. It's pretty cool either way. :)
