I am back, and continuing my one-per-ruler collection - starting with this awesome CNG win of Didia Clara - the daughter of Didius Julianus (the man who bought the throne!): Didia Clara. Augusta, AD 193. Æ Sestertius (31.5mm, 22.05 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck under Didius Julianus. Draped bust right / Hilaritas standing left, holding long palm frond set on ground and cornucopia. RIC IV 20 (Didius); Banti 1. Fine, green patina, chipped in a few spots, some earthen deposits. Very happy to have won this entry-level piece for significantly less than a vcoins price! If you have anything of Didius Julianus, his wife, or his daughter - please post them! I've been away for awhile, did you miss me? I have been traveling at lot! Here i am at the Meroe pyramids in Sudan:
Nice coin. I have nothing from Didius or his wife, but would love to have your new coin. You were gone? I didn't notice. Really though, I was wondering where you were travelling. The Sudan? Not sure it would be my choice of vacation hot spots.
Sudan is awesome. More pyramids in Sudan than in Egypt - I went camping there. Much safer than most people would think! And yes, I'm glad i didn't sell my collection and that I'm back in the game
Super coin @Greg Heinrich !!! And WELCOME BACK!!!! I'm still missing any of the Julianus family Hmmm, Sudan? I guess you completed your goal of visiting all the countries ending in 'stan' ?
Awesome coin Greg! Nice to hear from you again. And great picture of Meroe too. In my armchair travels I just saw a segment about Meroe on PBS's Africa's Great Civilizations. It looks to be a truly beautiful place.
Imagine that, all of my former butterfly/moth collector friends said that Sudan was extremely dangerous. The butterlies fly in the South/ Didinga Hills.
South of Khartoum is dangerous, especially Darfur. North of Khartoum, where all the pyramids are, is quite secure and safe.
OMG @Greg Heinrich , Congrats on the wonderful experience visiting the Pyramids in SUDAN! Welcome back. AND, Didia Clara is on my HIT LIST... almost got one a couple months ago, but decided Xmas gifts for the Grandkids were more important... I do have the Emperor... but a humble portrait struck in bronze: RI Didius Julianus 193 CE - 9 weeks - AE Sestertius
A Didia Clara, wow, that is a fantastic purchase! Here's my denarius of Didius. DIDIUS JULIANUS. 193 AD. AR Denarius 19mm. 3.01 gm. O: IMP CAES M DID IVLIAN AVG Laureate head right R: P M TR P COS Fortuna standing facing, head left, holding rudder on globe, and cornucopiae. - RIC IV 2; BMCRE 6; RSC 10. Ex-CNG Printed Auction 66, May 19, 2004, Lot: 1528; ex Wayne Philips This type with Fortuna was struck in gold, silver and bronze (dupondius and sestertius).
I suppose I should feel comforted that you are "only" in Sudan, since the last trip you posted about was North Korea. Nice to have you around again!
