Did this coin exist?

    My Mom has a penny made out of lead or steel or maybe silver?? Did these ever exist and if so what would be it's value? It's from 1943

    Yes they did...they are steel cents...only made in 1943
    I can't say what the value would be without seeing photos but most of the time they are worth $0.05 each

    The 1943 steel pennies are usually common amongst collectors, especially of pennies. Copper was needed for World War II, so low-grade zinc and steel were used for pennies. Since the steel and zinc are fairly sensitive materials left unprotected for 62 years, it's less common to find a 1943 steel without rust or deterioration of any type. An extremely rare find would be to find a 1943 copper. Many "tricksters" copper coat a 1943 steel to give the copper appearance. If it sticks to a magent, it's steel.

    Steel pennies are neat coins, one of my favorites in fact. It’s a reminder of just how much was given up for WWII. To me, they are symbol of how coins are more than just money, but the history of economy, political, and some time just the opinions of a culture.
