Hi I recently posted this morgan dollar in another thread, and we came out its EF-AU today i traded this morgan plus 30 bucks for an 1886 Liberty nickel. I would like opinions whether i got a good deal or not. Please be honest. Thanks
What makes you think that the nickel is anything special? I think you need to learn more about the minting process? Chris
Not sure that I've ever seen an A.G. net grade on a coin lacking any reverse. I'm still missing this one but would not have traded anything for it. Sorry.
Okay, that nickel reverse is worse than I was expecting. From the halos around the lettering, I'd wonder if that Morgan was cleaned. If so, I think you got a fair deal. If not, the other guy probably came out a bit ahead on the deal -- but now you've got an indisputable 1886 nickel, not even acid-dated. You might have been able to talk the other guy down a bit more, but I wouldn't obsess over it.
I think it was worth it, i got that morgan for just $35, so all together i paid $65 for an 1886 nickel which is cheaper then ive ever seen even in low grade. Now im just 2 coins away from the complete Liberty nickel series. So i definitely do not regret trading.
I was expecting to see something on the reverse. Instead, all I saw were scratches. I would have held out for s better coin and kept the Morgan. How can a blank reverse on any coin bring a net grade of AG-3? The obverse is AG-3 and the reverse is, at best, a P-1 so how does that work out? I had to vote no. I need that Liberty Nickel but not looking like that.
It looks like a few comparable to this one have sold on eBay in the $30-50 range. Most had more reverse detail and similar or slightly weaker obverse detail. There were also discolored ones with more detail that sold in the same range.
