Is there any way, besides them being in the original packaging to tell the difference between standard circulation and special mint set coins? I came across a 1965 quarter in change that kind of resembles a proof-like mirror, but an unlike-proof strike (kind of weak). Under 5X magnification, it doesn't have hairlines one would associate with it being cleaned. It does seem to "stand out" from other 65's
It is worth noting that even the most experienced "expert" often misattributes the SMS coins. Both PCGS and NGC have made the mistake, coins previously graded as MS were later graded as SMS or SP. And it's not just limited to the professional graders either. Even the most accomplished numismatists have trouble identifying these coins once they are removed from original packaging.
