The following is an 1893 Isabella Quarter. Was wondering what that discoloring around the edges are? Not too visible via the scanned in image, but more darker in regular/natural lighting. Also, is there a way to guess the condition of the coin, unslabbed?
Can't tell from these photos. aUNC, possibly cleaned. The rim toning is the redeemer here. Tough coin to find a nice example of.
This coin appears to be an AU, which has been dipped, improperly rinsed, and is retoning afterwards. The discoloration and flatness on her cheek and right leg are pointing to a low AU grade. Also note the splotchy orange character of the toning on the obverse - a classic sign of a dip and bad rinse. There also appear to be diagonal hairlines on the reverse above her leg, although that may just be a scuff. (As an aside to the OP - the condition of the coin, the grade, and the value, are completely independent of any slab. A slab will just tell you a recognized appraisers opinion of the value.)
