I’ve read about die deterioration and doubled dies. Unfortunately the info on doubled dies is kind of difficult to understand. Can anyone give me a clear idea on how to determine the difference? Here is my current coin in question
True double dies are literally the words, date, mintmark, or objects depicted on the coins are doubled... they are both (the original and the double) the same height. Die deterioration and MD (machine doubling) are lower than the original (date, etc.) Yours is DDD (Die-Deterioration Doubling)... If others would like to go more in-depth about DDD and MD (because its above my level of understanding) please do
Some day in the future, the graders and dealers may start calling them DD to increase profitability. About 1/3 of the various "DD" that are not slabbed are not really DD, they are types of MD or overuse. Jim
Just a future reference point for anyone that stumbles on this. This was the best link I found explaining what exactly to look for. I’m sure there is much more in depth explanations but the best starting point I’ve read. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/5688/Double-Dies-vs-Machine-Doubling/
