I've got a question on detecting cleaned coins that have been "re-toned." I recently purchased a 1924 s Standing Liberty Quarter on EBay. It looked great in the photos, was described as "Richly toned" now that I've got in in the album, it just doesn't look normal. It looks too dark, almost like it has a coat of enamel or something over it.

I've posted some photos even though it's hard to tell from a photo, what do you all think?

toning on coins will not always match other coins you may have in your collection.to understand a coin that has "re-toning" on it,you need to first understand if it has been cleaned.some consider an "old cleaning" with retoning on it,not that big of a deal, and some do not like it.the term that is being used now a days,is...is it "market acceptable"

what that ultimately means is.doe the coin appear,"without major hairlines" like it would fit into a collection of other coins,as normal.

your set so far, looks to have coins with no darker toning.so it sticks out a little.it all depends on how you are building your set.Hope this helps a little

and to add:the coin looks like it has had an old cleaning at one time.if you leave it in that album.it will in time, tone & blossom into something special.depending on what you paid for it.it might not be that big of a deal.but we all learn 1 coin at a time.

Thanks MadOutcast, that was a great response. You are correct, we all learn one coin at a time. My experience with this coin makes me appreciate just how difficult it is to assemble a set that all have the same grade/look.
Don't get me wrong, I like toning, particularily on SLQs, it seems to bring out the detail to a greater degree.
