Hey, guys hope everyone had a safe and Happy Christmas. One question what does everyone use to look at their coins to detect errors and DD? What is the best magnification to use to detect these errors? Thanks in advance and have a Happy New Year. Robert
I use a 16x magnification loupe that was made by Whitman. That helps me see the easily identified doubled dies. IMO anything that needs more magnification than that is not worth the time or effort to look for.
Furry is probably right, especially for starting out on the Variety coin hunt. Too much magnification is worse than too little I suppose. Under high magnification, everything looks suspicious. When I CRH, I use a lighted loop with maybe 7X magnification to do the rough search. But I also have dates/mms in mind that require closer examination. I do that under an inexpensive AmScope at 20x. Most things you see at 40x, the limit of my scope, are usually unlisted varieties.
The trusty and clear 4x scientific eye piece. It was sitting in with a bunch if old school labeled errors in 2x2 flips at a yard sale.
Also what I use, but only because the microscope on my Christmas wish list is still on my wish list. A 10-15x loupe can generally show you all you need to see for most varieties/errors (at least the ones I'm chasing).
I use a Bausch & Lomb Stereo microscope. I used loupes for years, and have a box full of them, but don't even pick them up any more. The stereo scope gives more information, with less effort and eyestrain.
