I really want a early (1795-1800) dollar for my collection, but most are out of my budget. But, I am seeing on Heritage that there are coins available for under 2 and even 1 thousand in details/ genuine slabs. Are these worth it?
That's a personal choice. For many collectors on tight budgets details-grade coins are their only alternatives. I avoid problem coins. Sometimes I make exceptions for very old copper because much of it led a tough life and those without problems can be silly expensive (e.g., wreath or chain cents). But for an early $1 type coin I would hold out for a problem-free one. They are available and if you are okay with a F-VF I think you can find one in your budget. As an example, I picked up this PCGS VF30 not long ago for $2500. Lance.
As the say goes "Patience is a virtue" If it were me save a little of your budget every month until you have enough to buy a nice problem free coin.
Alright. I almost bought a PCGS 35 1799 for 3000 last month but decided I would wait. I could afford it, I just wasn't sure if it was the right move to make. I think I may try and get in touch with that selller and see if he still has the coin. Thanks for you opinions!
That is a sweet dollar... I would certainly be happy with something in that grade looking like that one~~ Perhaps, at least for me, is the thought of breaking that 1800 barrier that appeals to me even more.
Since I enjoy participating in NGC Registry Sets, coins in "Details" or "Genuine" slabs don't do me much good. BOTTOM LINE: I either get graded coins or do without.
I would wait till I could find one with a grade. the price won't be cheap but why waste your money on a Genuine graded coin? If I were buying one I would go for a graded VF20+ is I had the money. :kewl:
I am the same just across the street. Waited a long time to get my 1795 Half and still waiting for a few more of the Busties. Going cheaper for the problems is not a good path to follow IMO.
