SteveX is ummmmm doing a great job of thread starting, so I thought I'd chip in with one. I am really only prompted to add to my small hectic collection of ancients by how much a coin shouts at me when i see it. I have no list, no goals, but if i see a nice coin, i have to buy it. I recently bought this Greek coin because of the Lemon coloured sand patina.....I have not photographed it myself yet, but here are the sellers pics. The obverse has had a hard time of it .....Its lovely in the hand. Post your lovely desert patina coins....... PHRYGIEN - APAMEIA BRONZE 19.98mm 7.93g
Got to love that boat John....... I have just bought 5 Postumus sestertii from France, one of which has a Galley reverse. Plan is to sell 4 to allow me to keep the Galley....heres hoping.
I dont own it, I was outbid at 170$.......but I still want it. Hope you dont mind me posting a coin i nearly owned?? sold by the same seller......grrrrr KINGS of COMMAGENE. Antiochos IV Epiphanes. AD 38-72. Æ
Here's a proto-Nabataean of Athena/Nike typology overstruck on a Seleucid issue of some Antiochus. I believe the undertype is of Antiochus IV. Antiochus and Athena combine to form an unintentional Jugate portrait, and on the reverse, the inscription TIOXOY is quite clear. It looks like the lettering of the host coin came through unscathed on account of a chip in the overstriking die. This is the only known example of a Nabataean coin struck over a Seleucid coin, and a glorious mess of a coin it is...
All other known proto-Nabataeans are overstruck on Ptolemaic bronzes, and most of them are so strongly overstruck that no detail of the host coin remains, other than the lathe centering dimple. Collectors of overstruck coins generally look for examples that present details of both the host and new coins. Here is the common proto-Nabataean overstrike with a coin that could have been its host for comparison. The reverse of the Nabataean shows the eagle's claws, feathers, and some of the legend, and since they both have desert "patinas" they belong in the thread...
