I keep most of my coins in a safety deposit box like most collectors , except it's a real pain to go get them , then return them . It would be much nicer to always have them around , exspecially when you read something on CT . and the coin you want to look at is in the vault. My question is what kind of home safe would protect them from burglars or fire. Any ideas ? rzage:confused:

I have looked into a safety deposit box in the past, but chose to purchase a home safe simply because I couldn't find a box large enough to hold my coin collection. There are many threads on CT that address the home safe issue, including one fairly recently. Ultimately, you have to do what makes you feel the most safe and comfortable. Even if my collection were to fit nicely into a 2x2 box, I don't think I would put my set in the bank simply because I like to have immediate access to them. Also, I don't own any extremely valuable coins. Maybe, if I did, I would put that one in the safety deposit box, but even my most valuable coins can be very easily replaced. I am more concerned about fire than I am theft. I just recently moved into an older home and there is always a concern with short circuits and stuff. At this point, I am just looking to upgrade my safe from a 30 minute fire protection to 2 hour. Just my two cents.

If you want to buy a home safe plan before you act. Think it through -

    • How much can you spend
    • Where would you put it and can you attach it there (most safes come with bolts to do so but you may want to consider having it done by someone skilled).
    • How much room do you need, overestimate by a size or two.
    • How big will your significant other put up with (good luck :))
You may want to ask a safe installer what they would recommend even if it is just to get ideas. Small safes start at about $200 and anything of any descent size is going to start at $400 if you look around. Ebay has deals sometimes but generally you need to be able to pick up (safes are VERY heavy!)

    Good Luck

the news today had a segment on peoples belongings being taken out of safety deposit boxes and sold in order to add funds to state budget account. Pretty scary so I will stick with my safe, plus the safety deposit boxes are small in my area.

Get a good large size safe and bolt it to the floor in a secluded area of your home. If you're placing it in your basement make sure you have a top quality dehumidifier and some gel packs to put in your safe to keep moisture to a minimum. My safe is hidden and bolted down. I'd rather have my coins here with me for my convenience. I feel that I have enough protection here with an alarm system that will wake the dead along with a few other goodies. BTW, getting a larger safe to begin with will prevent you from buying another once you run out of room in the smaller one. Just my opinion.

My personal collection is in the bank box. I just added a larger safe to my office, a large secure and HEAVY safe. That along with some other new security measures I have, and a well aimed .45 protect my pennies.

i bought a safe from a company called patriot safes. It weighs in at about 1000 pounds, and is quite large. Cost-wise it is not bad for what you are getting. I cant afford a "fort knox' safe (check them out - they are COOL!!!) so i just bought the biggest and best that i could afford!

I have a very small fire and water proof safe. Its like this:

So absolutely no protection from burglar's if they find it seeing as they can just pick it up and walk out but I've got it pretty well hidden. Also its fire and water proof so that really comforts me considering if my house burns down i know my coins are safe and they are safe from any kind of flood damage. Plus its still very effective at keeping things from family members =P

Another point, be wary of buying a safe and having it delivered or professionally installed. Part of having a personal safe is the secret nature of having one. Try to bolt into concrete and also the wall using the bottom of the safe and the back.

If you have it installed by a safe company - those people are bonded and licensed. It's very unlikely that they are going to come back and break in. They worked way to hard to get their bond to risk everything in a burglary of unknown potential.
