I had an opportunity today whilst on a visit to the bank to view again my Roman coin collection. Here is a coin that i really like, and i took the opportunity to take some pictures of it. It is a dupondius of Nero depicting the Macellum Magnum, the great meat market erected during Nero's reign on the Caelius. It is said to have survived until well into the advent of Christianity, serving later as fundament for what is now the church of St. Stefano Rotondo. The coin itself is in about very fine condition, with green, but unfortunately broken patina on the obverse. The reverse is smoother, with as much detail as one can hope for. Traces of the garlands between the columnade is still visible, as well as some of the ballustrades. I have seen pictures of similar coins in superb condition, and they are a real joy to see. The detail is absolutely amazing on better preserved samples. If anybody has any coins depicting roman architecture please go ahead and post them here. Regards, Eduard
Exceptional coin. I'm actually somewhat fond of the mottled patina on the obverse, and I doubt it detracts too much from such a lovely coin.
