Hi all, Just today I received some coins I had ordered. When I pulled out the 1972 s unc ike I noticed that there was another coin in the envelope. Here is a picture of it. I'm assuming that the seller didn't know it was in there or they wanted to get rid of it for some reason. I looked alittle on the web but didn't seem to find out anything about it. Would appreciate it if someone would enlighten me on this. It seems to be as heavy as a ike dollar. Thanks

This is a mint token. This one looks like it possibly came from the Denver Mint gift shop. The tokens I have are part of the mint sets released from the persective mint. As for a value, don't know that they have any real monitary value.
    Interesting packaging though.

I'm no expert on US coins or mints, but the inscriptions indicate that it is a medallion struck at the Denver Mint. My WAGs are that it was either produced in 1989 memorializing the 1789 establishment of the Treasury Department, of which the Mint is a branch; or simply included in mint sets from Denver at some time in the past.

I don't knoe if the Denver souvenir shop sold these seperately or if someone cut up a set for the coins but the medallion is included in all of the sets from the late 70's to the late 80's.Here is a photo of a set.

The bag that that is in is exactly like the one that I have. I visited the Denver mint in 1987 and you could put a dollar into a machine and then watch the coining press create a coin (that one) for you. It was then dropped into a plastic bag (just like that one) and then it fell down into a slot where you could pick it up. Mine has since been removed from the plastic and now resides in the SAE hole in my Dansco Type Set album. It's a nice rememory coin.

Thanks cave troll. I thought it was something like that. Nice to know the specifics. Are these tokens still being made or was this a thing of that time? Does anyone know if there are similar tokens of the other mints? Thought it might be neat to get one from each mint. I know they are worth that much but it would make a nice addition to my coins. Conversation pieces I guess.

I picked this up today at my coin shop and rather than start a new thread,I decided to add it to this one.It seems to be the S.F. Mint's version of a bicentennial set..not bad for $4.00 huh?:)

I have the exact same token/medal still in the same bag. I'm from Denver, but have actually never been to the Denver mint. I think some relatives visited us, went to the mint, and brought it back for me.

I went to the mint back in about '84 and my parents allowed me to mint the same coin for a dollar.
