dont know if this is where i put this thread... if it isnt sorry in advance...just let me know and ill move it.. i decided to collect every morgan coin i can....want to get up to at least 50 by the end of this year....(dont have a high budget so thats why 50) what do you guys think
I think you've made a sound decision and have quite a job ahead of you. Remember, the condition of the coin is just about everything. Good Luck... Take Care Ben
Thats a very good choice. Morgans are a very popular coin and there are many dates and mintmarks you can get thats very inexpesive. Just dont pass up a BU coin for a lower grade because you want to reach your goal of 50. Take your time and be very patient when buying coins for your collection. Never rush into a purchase, especially if you're spending a large amount of cash. Like most any series of coins there are those you'll eventually come across that will seem unreachable, just dont give up. We've all started somewhere. Good Luck!!
tanks for the comments guy.. and i am going going towards quantity...but of couse they have to be in decent condition... BTW: anyone know the average grade on these coins
I would buy the highest grade you can afford for each coin that you buy. Alot of Morgans can be bought for under $30 dollars in BU because they are common dates. Then there are those that couldnt be touched for thousands of dollars in the worst grade. You have to decide how you want to collect them. Some collectors put together a year date set which can be done by buying the most inexpensive date/mm for that year, if thats the direction you're going. But it sounds as if you're buying just to accumulate. If thats what you like to do then you should visit a coin dealer close to you and they should have "bargain boxes" of common date circulated (G-VG) Morgans for slightly over spot, around $16.00 ea..
It's a very good feeling when you finally decide on what to collect. Might I make a suggestion? As has been pointed out, quantity vs. quality is everything. One idea I have is that it might be nice to try to put together a matched set of coins...Matched for grade and appearance. Whatever you decide, good luck!
Whether you collect low grade (G, VG or F) middle grade (VF, XF OR AU), high grade (MS60 to MS68) or super grade (MS69 to MS70, proofs in Cameo, Deep Cameo, Mirrored Cameoes VAMS) or even culls (melt value) they are surely going to be worth more in seven to 10 years! Clinker
I think you made a great decision. There are many date/mintmark combinations among morgans where you can buy problem free VF and XF coins for under $20 each.
Stainless, I don't collect Morgans myself but still have 30-40 I reckon. Here's my advice. Ask a lot of questions here BEFORE purchasing because if you really start getting into the Morgans you'll appreciate the help. Huge series and can get very costly if you get into it heavy. Ask for advice before dropping too much money. clembo
Clembo has some great advice for you. Also, if you are going to get serious buy the book. In this instance I'd start with Whitman's Guide on Morgan Dollars, by Q. David Bowers.
i think that is a good idea buying just morgans since silver is going up and up all the time. good luck on your purchases and make sure you post pictures of them!
